Common description
Administrative, political, cultural, scientific, and the main tourist center of the country, the cosmopolitan province of Havana is the smallest and most populous province of Cuba. The beginning of tourism in this part of Cuban territory dates back to the middle of the XIX century, when regular sea connections between the United States and Cuba and the construction of hotels around Havana Bay began, and now Havana is visited annually by more than half of all foreign tourists.
Its main charm - the city itself with the diversity of its architecture, wide avenues and famous boulevards, and especially its historic center, in 1982 declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city lives a rich cultural life, scientific activity does not stop here, but at the same time on 47 km of coast there are 20 km of beaches, also suitable for scuba diving and fishing on the high seas. The capital has a significant hotel and off-site infrastructure, and its natural environment is protected by a wide green belt. The two main symbols of Havana - the Giraldilla weather vane and the lighthouse of the fortress of El Morro, and three places where everyone wants to visit - the cabaret "Tropicana", tavern "Bodegita del Medio" and bar-restaurant "Floridita".
To make your stay especially enjoyable, we recommend visiting:
Historical center. The starting point of the tour may be El Templete - a small chapel in the neoclassical style, built in 1828 on the site where the city is supposed to have been founded; then your way will pass through the Armament Square (Plaza de Armas), the Cathedral Square (Plaza de la Cathedral) and the Old Square (Plaza Velha), around which are grouped magnificent ancient buildings and structures that were once part of the surrounding city walls.
Cannon shot ceremony. Magnificent traditional ceremony, held every night at nine o'clock in the fortress of San Carlos de la Cabana. In the colonial era, a cannon shot served as a signal to close the city gates and stretch the chain between the fortresses of El Morro and La Punta, which blocked the ships' entrance to the bay. Today marks the beginning of a fun Havana night.
Jose Marty Memorial. This important memorial in Revolution Square, Jose Marty, was unveiled in 1996 and houses various relics, original objects, documents and engravings related to the life and work of the Apostle of the Cuban Revolution. At the top of the obelisk - a concrete, marble-clad tower 138.5 m above sea level - is the highest observation deck in the capital.
Paseo del Prado. Although this boulevard is not the oldest in the city (before it there was another - Alameda de Paula), Paseo del Prado has been for centuries the most important central artery of Havana. This tall tree-lined boulevard runs from Central Park to the famous century-old Malecon - Havana's waterfront.
Havana Christ. The work of the famous Cuban sculptor Hilmi Madera is one of the capital's greatest monuments and the largest open-air statue made of Carrara marble by a woman. Its height is 18 m, it rises to the top of La Cabanya hill above the entrance to Havana Bay.
Palace of Fine Arts. More than 47,000 exhibits are stored in the funds of this museum complex, which after careful work on expansion, reorganization and restoration is now considered one of the most significant among such institutions in the world. The Cuban Art Department, housed in the former Palace of Fine Arts, houses works by more than 300 artists of all generations, and the nearby Asturias Center is home to art from around the world, including Flemish, Dutch, German, Italian, French and French. English, American schools, as well as Asian and Latin American countries; here is an interesting collection of art of the ancient world (Egypt, Greece and Rome) and the largest collection of Spanish paintings of all that exist outside the Iberian Peninsula.
Ammel Lane. A real open-air museum of African art. Located in the Cayo Hueso area, its most notable feature is a 100 m long wall mural by self-taught artist Salvador Gonzalez.
The farmstead "Vihia". This estate, located in the municipality of San Francisco de Paula, on the outskirts of the capital, houses the Hemingway Museum. Together with the fishing village of Cochimar, it is one of the main places associated with the life in Cuba of the so-called Bronze God of American literature.
La Ramp. One of the main central arteries of the Cuban capital. About one kilometer long, this avenue descends from L Street to the seaside promenade - Malekon.
National Botanical Garden. Occupies an area of 600 hectares. It is divided into 18 zones, and about one-fifth of it is allocated to local plants. One of the main attractions is the Japanese Garden, donated by the government of this country in 1989 and created by the master of garden art Yoshikuni Arake.
