Common description
Phuket is the largest island in Thailand. There are several sandy beaches on the west coast, while on the east coast the beaches are usually less well-maintained and therefore muddy. However, next to the east coast, in contrast to the west, there are many small and medium islets, the beaches of which are of very high quality. Near the southernmost point of the island is Laem Promthep (Cape Brahma), a popular sunset spot. The “golden mean” between the western and eastern beaches is the southernmost beach of the island - Nai Harn (Nai Harn), the wide sandy strip of which, as well as the soft descent into the sea, won him the fame of one of the best beaches in Phuket (often contested by supporters of Karon Beach) ...
One of the most popular tourist areas is Patong Beach in the central part of the west coast, this beach is wide and long. Phuket nightlife and cheap shopping are concentrated in Patong and the area is highly developed.
Other popular beaches are concentrated south of Patong. Far from Patong (located in the center of the western coast of the island) to the south are Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Noi Beach, and to the north - Surin, Kamala, Bang Tao, Nai Thon, Nai Yang and Mai Khao. These areas are generally less developed than Patong and are typically used by people looking for a more relaxing getaway away from the crowds.
There are several coral islands in the south of Phuket, the Similan Islands to the northwest, and the Phi Phi Islands to the southeast. All islands are suitable for diving.
In the east, in Pangna Bay, the islands of Yao Yai and Yao Noi are located, large in area (about a third of Phuket), inhabited mainly by Muslim fishermen and sea gypsies. On these islands, in contrast to Phuket, the tourist infrastructure is poorly developed, there are only a few hotels.
