Common description
Portugal, officially the Portuguese Republic, is the westernmost state in continental Europe. The state is located in the southwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula. In the north and east it borders with Spain, in the south and west it is washed by the Atlantic Ocean. The name of the country comes from the city of Porto (lat. Portus Cale - "warm port").

The climate is subtropical, Mediterranean. Average January temperatures are 5-10°C, July 20-27°C. Precipitation on the plains is from 400 to 800 mm, in the mountains from 1000 to 2500 mm per year.
